Rewriting my first post: a before-and-after, with commentary Writing it up because I had to work it out twice and would rather nobody else did.

I want to check my reasoning rather than get a conclusion.

My current understanding is set out below in the order I arrived at it. I think step two is the weakest part and I would like that examined first.

The opening post answers the question as asked. The question underneath it is different.

Edit the first post rather than adding the missing detail in reply nine. People arriving later read the first post and stop.

When you quote a figure from somewhere else, say where from. Not as a formality — the answer frequently depends on whether the number came from a certificate, an independent report or a forum post.

Someone will know this better than I do and I hope they say so.

Do not apologise in the first line. It costs you the space where the question should be, and nobody here thinks a question is an imposition.

That is all the detail I have. Someone else will have more.
